Free and independent private parking appeals service for Scotland & Northern Ireland

From the 1 May 2019 motorists in Scotland and Northern Ireland will be able to appeal private parking tickets issued by operators in the British Parking Association’s Approved Operator Scheme (AOS).  POPLA (Parking on Private Land Appeals) is the leading independent appeals service and has been available to motorists in England and Wales since 2012.

Andrew Pester, BPA Chief Executive said:  “We are delighted that motorists in Scotland & Northern Ireland will now be able to access an independent and free appeals service – POPLA - when they consider a parking ticket has been unfairly issued. 

“We are also continuing to work closely with the Scottish Government and in Northern Ireland to encourage legislation for keeper liability (as there is in England and Wales) to support effective parking management for all.”

Since its introduction, POPLA has allowed free and independent redress for thousands of motorists in England and Wales who receive parking tickets on private land where they feel they have been treated unfairly.  Over a quarter of a million motorists to date have lodged an appeal with approximately half being successful.

Regardless of whether motorists park in private car parks, council car parks or on-street, motorists should always check any signage displayed to make sure they know and understand the rules that apply. It’s also important to ensure that anything that needs to be displayed, such as a voucher or a permit, is properly displayed and visible from outside the vehicle.
