Lucky Thirteen as Tendring District Council car parks receive top safety awards

Council demonstrates ongoing commitment to safety and management of its parking facilities

Tendring District Council has added a further 13 car parks to its roster of safer car parks following their recent assessment by the Police and the BPA. This is a great achievement and demonstrates that the parking facilities have measures in place that actively deter crime and the fear of crime. The latest car park awards are in addition to 15 awarded in reviews in 2023, meaning 28 of TDC’s car parks hold Park Mark accreditation.

Park Mark® is the accredited logo of the Safer Parking Scheme. It is given to parking facilities that have achieved the requirements of a risk assessment conducted by the Police and the BPA. Their assessments include management and maintenance of the facility, checking that there are appropriate levels of surveillance, lighting, signage, and cleanliness.  All these are known to reduce the opportunity for crime and thus create a safer environment for the motorist and their vehicle.

Car parks with a Park Mark can use signage featuring the distinctive Park Mark® tick so drivers know exactly where to go for safe parking. Facilities that have received this award have seen a drop in vehicle-related crime of over 80%.

Mick Barry, TDC Cabinet Member with responsibility for parking, said the awards were a fantastic achievement. “These awards reflect the hard work of our staff in maintaining and patrolling our car parks right across the district, meaning motorists can park there with confidence. To have so many car parks with this accreditation is brilliant in itself and especially to have our newest car park achieve the standard shows that our project to rejuvenate the derelict Starlings site has paid off.”

Ian Wilson, BPA Area Manager, South East said: “I am so impressed with the team at Tendring District Council and their commitment to expanding the council’s participation in the Park Mark and Park Access schemes. Their proactive efforts to continue to add new sites to these initiatives are a testament to their unwavering commitment to providing safe and accessible parking. Their dedication to excellence sets a high standard for what can be achieved with continuous improvement and a genuine concern for the community’s wellbeing.”
